Okoume Marine Plywood AB Grade
Product Details of Marine Plywood
1, Marine plywood should comply with BS 1088-1 Marine plywood. BS 1088-1 specifies two types of marine plywood:
• standard marine plywood
• lightweight marine plywood.
2, Unlike earlier versions, BS 1088-1:2003 does not specify the species to be used; instead it gives requirements for a minimum level of durability and a limit on nominal density.
BS 1088 plywoods are commonly available from UK suppliers. Material sold as marine plywood, without reference to BS 1088, may not be of the same quality. Check the manufacturer’s specification before purchase to ensure that the product is suitable.
3, Marine plywood is manufactured from durable face and core veneers, with few defects; so it performs longer in both humid and wet conditions and resists delaminating and fungal attack. Its construction is such that it can be used in environments where it is exposed to moisture for long periods. Each wood veneer will be the same species throughout (Fir, Okoume, and Meranti), and have minimal core gap, limiting the chance of trapping water in the plywood and hence providing a solid and stable glue bond. It uses an exterior Water and Boil Proof (WBP) glue.
4, Okoumé Marine plywood is graded as being compliant with BS-1088, which is a British Standard for marine plywood. Our Marine Okoume plywood has a Lloyd’s of London stamp that certifies it to be BS 1088.
BS-1088 grading requires the same species throughout (face, back, and core), defect-free A Grade Face veneer with no repairs. Back veneer is to have no more than two repairs. Both Face and Back Veneer are a minimum of 1mm thick after sanding and core gaps cannot exceed 1mm.
5, Okoume is a fast growing, plantation grown tropical hardwood. Okoume’s clear, beautifully figured grain has a golden, honey colored hue beneath epoxy and varnish, while its low density provides ultra light weight for hull applications. Okoume is ideal for boat building, soffits, the transpiration industry, joinery work (interior & exterior), cladding, interior fittings and more.
